Carraway Workers’ Camp
A purpose-built residential camp on the eastern bank of Carraway Gorge, constructed for dam laborers.
The Carraway Workers’ Camp was built in 1947 to house the workforce assembled for construction of Carraway Dam. Situated on the eastern bank of Carraway Gorge, the camp provided barracks, a commissary, and support facilities for several hundred workers during the dam’s construction phase.
After the dam’s completion in 1951, the camp was retained by the Appalachian Energy & Mine Commission for maintenance and operations personnel. It was formally vacated in the mid-1970s as the Commission wound down valley operations.
The camp’s footprint remains on the eastern bank.
