Sacred Heart

The oldest standing building in Mill Hollow, a church and graveyard at the center of the town’s oral tradition.

Sacred Heart is the church and graveyard occupying the district of the same name in Mill Hollow. It is the oldest standing structure in the settlement and the focal point of a significant portion of the valley’s local folklore.

The church served the community through the Commission period and was among the last institutions to close as the Hollow emptied. Its graveyard contains a number of inscriptions that do not correspond to any documented burial in the Commission’s records.

Folklore Associations

Sacred Heart appears in multiple strands of the valley’s oral tradition. Lights have been reported in the windows during years when the building was documented as vacant. Accounts of services held after the last congregation left are noted in the folklore record without corroboration.
